My Approach to Counselling

One size does not fit all, and counselling does not equal counselling. I am here to help you, and that means that the way I work with you, is as unique as you are. As a person-centred counsellor, I believe that you are the expert on you, and I want to support you in the way that feels right to you.

I offer different techniques to practice and use, and it is up to you how often you attend counselling. Some clients come with one well-defined issue, which they resolve in one to three sessions. Others choose to see me over a period of time to address different layers and aspects of the difficulties they are experiencing. The aim is always to have you guide me, so I can give you tools and techniques you can use to make your life better and richer.

There are many wonderful approaches in counselling, and different techniques suit different clients. While you’ll always be experiencing ‘counselling with Hilke’, our sessions will be flavoured by your personality and our therapeutic relationship.

My background is in energy medicine (Acupuncture) as well as nutrition, physical therapies, and teaching; in counselling I include the whole person, not just their mind. Our brains are part of our bodies, and our whole nervous system is in exchange with our thoughts and emotions. An integrative approach is a great chance to make counselling more effective.

Our sessions may be a conversation, and if it fits, I may offer you to work with your breath and to feel your emotions in your body. We can also ‘walk and talk’ during our sessions, which can be both grounding and energising. I will also offer you simple exercises you can practise between sessions to strengthen what we have talked about, and to further your journey to wellbeing. While drawing on a variety of approaches and tools, it is important to me that any interventions I use are evidence based.

Our sessions are a dialogue, and I will always ask you for your feedback on the usefulness of our sessions. This helps me to make counselling effective for you and give you the most benefit in the time we have together.

If you are curious about having counselling with me, and are wondering if we would work well together, contact me for a free 15-minute chat. I’m looking forward to getting to know you!
